Alternate Energy Systems, Dyersville, Iowa specializes in Solar Thermal Domestic Hot water and heating systems. Beginning in 1972, we have designed and installed over 350 PV and solar thermal solar systems from projects for the DIY person to complete systems. We specialize in helping people save on their utility bills through seminars, solar workshops and the correct installation of solar equipment. Owner Tom Snyder is a co-founder of the Iowa Renewable Energy Association (IRENEW), an Iowa Master Plumber, a solar thermal licensing instructor, and a licensed Iowa Teacher. He taught Science and Math from 1969 to 2000. Tom has taught the last 20 summers at the University of Dubuque and solar licensing classes at Northeast Iowa Community College for the last 3 years. In 2007, Tom became the first NABCEP nationally certified solar thermal installer in Iowa. NABCEP certification is the highest standard of excellence in solar energy and is your guarantee of knowledge and experience. In 1997, Tom procured 114 PV panels from Brookhaven National Labs in New York for IRENEW and also a Hydrogen Fuel Cell donated from Alliant Energy for IRENEW.
Projects and consultations:
Tom has held many energy seminars and classes throughout the Midwest as well as written numerous articles on energy issues for Iowa newspapers and national energy magazines, including Home Power Magazine. He also presents workshops on these topics and participates in organizing other programs. Tom has done Solar Thermal and PV seminars with Neumann Monson Architects, Iowa City and Durrant Architects, Dubuque. Tom has also worked on Strawbale and SIP homes utilizing solar heat for floor radiant heat. During the 1970’s and 1980s, Tom designed and installed PV systems for natural gas pumping stations in Iowa.
